What is difference between HYPOthyroidism and HYPERthyroidism?
The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland which produces thyroid hormones like thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones influence many bodily functions, including heart rate, energy production, temperature regulation,etc.
HYPOthyroidism means an underactive thyroid, where the thyroid gland is unable to generate enough thyroid hormones.
HYPERthyroidism means an overactive thyroid, where the thyroid gland generates too much thyroid hormones.

What is goiter?
A goiter is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. It can occur in both hypo- and hyperthyroidism, as well as in cases with normal thyroid function (euthyroid).
How are thyroid problems diagnosed?
It starts with a detailed history and physical examination, followed by blood tests for thyroid function and occasional thyroid antibodies. Lastly, some people may need additional imaging tests like ultrasonography, CT or FNAC.
Do I need surgery for thyroid problems?
Surgery maybe required for abnormal FNA result or an enlarging goiter or occasionally uncontrolled hyperthyroidism.
