Adrenal Disorders

Where are adrenal glands located?

Adrenal glands are two small triangular shaped organs located on top of the kidneys.

What do the adrenal glands do?

Adrenal glands produce important hormones such as cortisol, aldosterone, adrenaline, and sex hormones, which are critical for regulating metabolism, immune response, blood pressure, stress responses, and other vital functions.

What are the symptoms of adrenal disorders?

Symptoms of adrenal disorders can be due to overproduction or underproduction of hormones.

Overproduction of adrenal hormones can cause symptoms such as weight gain, muscle weakness, thinning of skin, elevated BP, fast heartbeat, dizziness, anxiety, low potassium, etc.

Underproduction of adrenal hormones can cause low BP, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, salt craving, darkening of skin, irregular periods, excessive hair growth, and acne in women.

What are treatment options for adrenal disorders?

Treatment options for adrenal disorders include observation, surgery and replacement of missing hormones.

Do all patients with adrenal disorders need surgery?

No, surgery may be required for large growths or if the growth is producing too much of one of the adrenal hormones or for the rare adrenal cancer patient. If the issue is due to not enough adrenal hormone, treatment is to replace the missing hormone.
